SOWAP-Old Weymouth high st. petition comments at ten days...

sorry, bit of a long post this. It seems a lot of people feel strongly about this subject, and rightly so. When we reach a thousand signatures the council have to debate the issue. So please continue to share the SOWAP petition and encourage others to do so.

I was born in Weymouth in the 60s and still visit the town regularly though I moved away in the 90s. In that time I have seen many bad planning decisions with beautiful buildings and features disappearing in the name of "progress". Weymouth has an important history and story to tell and losing the old high street would be yet another nail in the coffin. Please leave something of the old Weymouth to inform and educate future generations and give Weymouthians something to be proud of.

I am a frequent visitor to Weymouth, and really appreciate the work done by Mark Vine and the Old Town Hall people for the conservation of the town's unique heritage. Heritage brings tourism and places of special Historical interest should be carefully preserved and investigated. Keep our English heritage alive_ it is what makes Dorset so unique.

I was born in Weymouth and over the years the council have ruined Weymouth. For example the coloured lights on the prom, the Victorian shelters on the prom the daft road layouts and roundabouts. Please preserve what history is left of Weymouth.

Buildings are known to have existed on this site since at least Tudor times and the remains there today should be kept and be accessible to all. It is an important site in Weymouth's history and mistakes of the 1960s should not be repeated. The protection of our heritage should be paramount.

So many places of interest are being lost forever and we should be investing in them and capitalising on them instead of losing them forever

The Boot should never change enough has been done to ruin this ancient Weymouth High Street, why can't the councillors in Melcombe Regis start developing their own town and leave ours alone. I recently visited Weymouth, the town where I grew up. Seeing the Colwell Centre reminded me of the council's decision not to preserve the unique Victorian edifice that was behind the buildings. Although this is a different council, I am disappointed to see the same mistakes being made again and again. Why do the local decision makers find it so difficult to grasp the value of the town's heritage. I suggest a field trip to local seaside towns who have prospered as a result of better stewardship of their assets.

Our heritage is precious we lost too much of it when the original council building was developed so let's not make the same mistake again. As well as the obvious social reasons for taking care of what's left there is a strong business case for making the most of our history and developing heritage tourism ...

I object to an historic sites being 'redeveloped' because they are old or in the way of some developer's vision for an area. Old does not mean that it is of little or no value. I grew up in Weymouth and now live in the new town of Milton Keynes where historic areas have been excavated and preserved for future generations. People like history and want to be able to see where historical events took place.

The archaeology under threat encapsulates a most significant part of Weymouth's history. More than that, it does not merely reflect the epic struggle that was the English Civil War, that key determinant of our modern nation's character, it shelters crucial information concerning a key aspect of the conflict. It is vital that there be a full and detailed archaeological study. To do otherwise would be an act of cultural and historical barbarism. The benefits that would certainly accrue to the town's tourism should not need stating.

Heritage goes hand in hand with Dorset's primary industry - leisure and tourism. It is important that in the present day we embrace architectural and archaeological conservation alongside development/re-development. Few, if any, would dispute that the old council buildings in Weymouth are a blot that could do with being cleared away, it is my hope that this opportunity to make proper use of the site reflecting the historical significance of the location is embraced.

Heritage on Weymouth Harbourside between North Quay and the lifting bridge has been treated very poorly by successive councils. It is important that any development on the Council office site is sympathetic with the heritage that is still left and the historical narrative of that area.

This area represents a significant part in the heritage and history of the local area. We cannot continue to systematically remove important aspects of the past merely to appease the greed of some. This island has a rich history and we need to promote this fact at every opportunity; we can only do this by preserving our historical past and not covering it over with modernity

  1. Please make more of Weymouth and the remaining historical sites. Too many have been swept aside to make 'improvements'

  2. There has been a lot of redevelopment in Weymouth and unless you are a local, it is far too easy to not know, or forget, the long history that this town has. Not everything should be reduced to memoirs in a book or online. Please preserve this town's historical sites.
