Old Weymouth High Street

An online facebook group (SOWAP) Save Old Weymouth & Portland, are pressing for a full archaeological excavation before any future building work is done on the plum cash-cow that is the old Weymouth High Street site and also, the retaining of those few historical/archaeological features that managed to survive the outrageous and sickening redevelopment there of the late 1960's/early 1970s.

Almost an entire street of originally 17th century and earlier buildings were shamefully bulldozed into oblivion to satisfy the then philistine council's desire to have a new office block with a sea view to work in and rumours still abound today of dirty deals being done at the time with one Councillor allegedly getting the demolition contract. But now it seems that those old scars are reopened as hundreds of residents have signed the groups petition and left damning comments about what happened back then on the petition page along with one very clear message for the present council .. HERITAGE AND HISTORY MATTERS IN WEYMOUTH! 

The site was to be rented to a developer but is now due to be sold off instead, a decision that will bring the council a much higher price, but will leave them with no control whatsoever over what is built there. And it is this that has set the alarm bells ringing amongst the history-loving residents and visitors of Weymouth...

... And so, this is just a small part of the history of this unique and very special street and area of Weymouth. An area which SOWAP have vowed to look after and to ensure it receives the respect it so richly deserves. We would also like to see a memorial stone placed there as part of the new development to mark, not only the fallen, but also the achievement of Colonel William Sydenham, Dorset's forgotten and unsung hero.

In that time I have seen many bad planning decisions with beautiful buildings and features disappearing in the name of "progress". Weymouth has an important history and story to tell and losing the old high street would be yet another nail in the coffin.   Buildings are known to have existed on this site since at least Tudor times and the remains there today should be kept and be accessible to all. It is an important site in Weymouth's history and mistakes of the 1960s should not be repeated. The protection of our heritage should be paramount.

  I recently visited Weymouth, the town where I grew up. Seeing the Colwell Centre reminded me of the council's decision not to preserve the unique Victorian edifice that was behind the buildings. Although this is a different council, I am disappointed to see the same mistakes being made again and again. Why do the local decision makers find it so difficult to grasp the value of the town's heritage. I suggest a field trip to local seaside towns who have prospered as a result of better stewardship of their assets.

  I object to an historic sites being 'redeveloped' because they are old or in the way of some developer's vision for an area. Old does not mean that it is of little or no value. I grew up in Weymouth and now live in the new town of Milton Keynes where historic areas have been excavated and preserved for future generations. People like history and want to be able to see where historical events took place.

More than that, it does not merely reflect the epic struggle that was the English Civil War, that key determinant of our modern nation's character, it shelters crucial information concerning a key aspect of the conflict. It is vital that there be a full and detailed archaeological study. To do otherwise would be an act of cultural and historical barbarism.   Heritage goes hand in hand with Dorset's primary industry - leisure and tourism. It is important that in the present day we embrace architectural and archaeological conservation alongside development/re-development. Few, if any, would dispute that the old council buildings in Weymouth are a blot that could do with being cleared away, it is my hope that this opportunity to make proper use of the site reflecting the historical significance of the location is embraced.

  Heritage on Weymouth Harbourside between North Quay and the lifting bridge has been treated very poorly by successive councils. It is important that any development on the Council office site is sympathetic with the heritage that is still left and the historical narrative of that area.

  This is an important historical site which has already lost so much in the destruction brought about by the building if the council offices.

  And on a more personal note I discovered 20 years after moving here that my grandfather was born in this street which we were unaware of till looking for my roots!

  although I do not live in Weymouth I come there so often I see it as my second home. I love the history of the place and once historical buildings are torn down they're gone forever. High Street should be brought back to what it looked like and careful archeological excavation should take place first!
